🌾 Almost deserted

Agulhas Beach:
empty sand just past Pontal

A stretch of sand with almost nothing built on it, for long walks where you barely meet anyone. Agulhas Beach is the wildest side of Fortim, and it is a walk away from Pontal de Maceió.

🚶 Getting there

A walk from Pontal

The simplest way is to go to Pontal de Maceió and carry on along the sand at low tide, away from the river. The houses soon fall behind and the beach opens up, wide and empty.

As with almost everything in Fortim, the tide is in charge: it comes about 50 minutes later each day. Check the tide table and plan to walk back before the water rises.

🌾 What it is like

A beach for long walks

People come to Agulhas Beach for the opposite of Canto da Barra: no kiosks, hardly anyone on the sand and plenty of room to walk. Depending on the season, it is deserted or has just a few people spread out.

Late afternoons here are quiet, with the sound of wind and sea and little else. The sun sets between 5:20 and 5:55 pm depending on the time of year.

⚠️ Safety

Bring your own and tell someone where you are going

There are no kiosks, no shade and no lifeguards. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat and a beach umbrella if you plan to stay the afternoon. Tell your guesthouse where you are going and be back before dark.

Phone signal may drop away from the village. Agree on a return time with someone and do not swim alone.

i
The steady wind is deceptive: you barely feel hot, but the sun is still strong. Reapply sunscreen every two hours.
