Pirangi River:
Fortim's other kind of water

A few kilometres from the open Atlantic, the mouth of the Pirangi River offers calm, shallow river water surrounded by mangroves. It feels completely different from the beaches of the Barra and Pontal.

🌿 Where it is

A second river a few kilometres from the Jaguaribe

Fortim sits between two rivers. The famous one is the Jaguaribe, which shapes the Barra and Pontal. The other is the Pirangi, a smaller estuary that reaches the sea a little over 5 km west of the Jaguaribe mouth.

At the Pirangi mouth, the dunes push the river's outlet and create stretches of calm, shallow water between the sand and the vegetation, without the force of the open sea.

🦀 Nature

Calm water and mangroves

The banks of the Pirangi are covered in mangroves, mostly red mangrove, the natural nursery for the crabs, fish and birds you will see along the way. This is a trip for slowing down: a quiet swim, silence and scenery.

Respect the mangrove: do not pull up plants, do not leave rubbish and do not drive cars or motorbikes into the vegetation.

⚠️ Safety

How to go safely

Access is not signposted like the Barra beaches. The safest option is to go with someone who knows the way, such as the buggy drivers and local guides listed on the Tours page, or to ask your guesthouse for directions.

There are no kiosks or lifeguards. Bring water, sunscreen and insect repellent, tell someone where you are going and be back before dark.

i
In mangrove areas, insect repellent makes a real difference in the late afternoon.
