What to Do in Fortim
When It Rains
Rain in Fortim has a clear season, and it almost never lasts all day. This guide shows how much it rains each month, based on 30-year averages, what time showers usually fall on the Ceará coast, what to do when the sky closes in, and how to stay safe from lightning on the beach and the river.
When it rains in Fortim
Climatempo's climate table for Fortim, built from 30-year averages, shows a clear split. March (204 mm) and April (215 mm) are the wettest months. February (124 mm) and May (116 mm) come next, and June still gets 61 mm. From August to November, the average stays at 8 mm a month or less: in practice, that is the dry season.
This matches the calendar used by Funceme, Ceará's weather agency, which calls February to May the rainy season, when the Intertropical Convergence Zone brings most of the state's rain. From June to August it rains less, but the coast still gets showers: in July 2019, for example, Fortim recorded the highest total in the state in a single night, 33 mm.
Temperature barely changes with the rain. Lows stay between 24 °C and 26 °C and highs between 29 °C and 30 °C all year, so a cloudy day in Fortim is still warm.
- Wettest: March and April.
- Moderate rain: January, February, May and June.
- Almost dry: August to November.
What time the rain usually falls
In bulletins during the 2026 rainy season, Funceme explained that along the coastal strip, isolated showers tend to happen overnight and in the early morning, driven by local convection. It is not a fixed rule, and some days bring afternoon rain, but the pattern helps with planning: it is often worth waiting until mid-morning before giving up on the beach.
Since rain in Fortim usually comes in short bursts, check the day's forecast and the radar before heading out, and pair each outdoor plan with a covered option nearby. Keep in mind that wind is usually lighter in the rainy season: our guide to the best time to visit Fortim explains what that means for kitesurfers.
Thunder on the beach or the river: what to do
Light rain does not spoil a swim, but thunder is another matter. The Atmospheric Electricity Group at Brazil's space research institute, Inpe (Elat), advises you to get out of the water and avoid walking on open ground, such as the beach, during a thunderstorm. It also warns against sheltering under a beach umbrella, tent or kiosk.
The recommended shelter is a building or a closed, non-convertible car, with doors and windows shut and without touching the metal body. In Fortim this applies to kiters, river boat trips on the Jaguaribe and the low-tide walk to Praia do Farol: if the sky darkens and you hear thunder, head back early, and agree on a return plan with your boatman or instructor.
Historic centre of Aracati
Aracati, the neighbouring town, is the obvious choice for a grey day. Rua Grande (officially Rua Coronel Alexanzito) is lined with public buildings and mansions built between the 18th and 19th centuries, and the whole ensemble is protected by Iphan, Brazil's national heritage agency. The Museu Jaguaribano has occupied the former Solar do Barão de Aracati since 1968, a neoclassical townhouse with a facade of Portuguese tiles.
The museum has closed for restoration more than once, so check that it is open before you go. Directions, distances and how to combine Aracati with Canoa Quebrada are in our Aracati and Canoa Quebrada day trip.
Spa, long lunches and delivery
A rainy day is good for the things you usually leave for later. YWI Spa, at Jaguaríndia Village, offers massages and body treatments; prices, hours and whether non-guests are welcome are confirmed through its Instagram, as explained on our spa and wellness page.
It is also a day for an unhurried lunch. Pick a covered table from the restaurant guide or eat in: the food delivery in Fortim guide lists places that deliver lunch, pizza, sushi and burgers via WhatsApp. In the morning, Zeste, the French bakery in Pontal de Maceió, delivers too (it is closed on Wednesdays).
An evening in Pontal de Maceió
Since showers tend to be short, evenings are often dry. In Pontal de Maceió, the Feirinha do Pontal sets up stalls with clothes, crochet and crafts under strings of lights; see more in shopping in Fortim. Opening days vary, so ask at your guesthouse before going.
If you are staying in Barra do Fortim, guesthouses such as Barra Beach House are a few minutes' drive from Pontal and from Aracati, which makes it easy to switch plans with the weather.
