Kitesurfing in Fortim:
where to learn and when the wind blows

The combination of steady trade winds with shallow, warm water put Barra do Fortim among Brazil's best kitesurf spots — and also made it one of the easiest places in the country to learn from scratch.

🌬️ When the wind is strongest

July to February: the prime window

The trade winds blow stronger and steadier between July and February, making this the busiest stretch for both experienced riders and beginners. You can still ride outside this window, but the days are more hit-or-miss.

The shallow, warm water that forms where the Rio Jaguaribe meets the sea cuts down the risk considerably for beginners — one reason Fortim became a learning destination, not just a spot for people who already know how to ride.

🏫 Where to learn

Schools for every level in Pontal de Maceió

Pontal de Maceió is home to Fortim's international kitesurf community, and that's where the main schools operate: Pontal Kite School, a traditional reference and one of the pioneers of the sport in the region; One Launch Kite House, right on the beach with access to the best part of the spot; and Duotone Pro Center Fortim, the brand's second center in the Americas.

All three offer beginner lessons and equipment rental, so you don't need to travel with your own kite. If you've never ridden before, it's worth asking about an intro package before booking single lessons — it usually works out cheaper.

🎒 Before your first lesson

What to know if you've never ridden before

Most lessons start on land, learning to control the kite before getting in the water — that's normal and part of the learning curve. Water-resistant sunscreen and a long-sleeve rash guard help a lot against the sun and board rash.

On the open beaches, the area set aside for kite maneuvers is usually marked. Even if you're not riding, keep your distance from the lines when walking the beach during peak wind hours.
