Fortim without a car:
getting there and getting around

Fortim works well without a car if you build the trip around one area rather than trying to fit every beach in the municipality into a single day. What changes is the planning: your arrival and the hops between beaches need to be arranged in advance.

🚌 Arriving

How to get to Fortim without driving

Fortim is about 135 km from Fortaleza, and no bus service stops inside the town. In practice there are two ways in.

Bus to Aracati, then the last leg

Viação São Benedito runs from the Engenheiro João Thomé bus terminal in Fortaleza towards Aracati and Canoa Quebrada. It usually takes around four hours, because the bus stops in towns along the way. Aracati to Fortim is about 20 km, which you cover by taxi or ride app — or with a pickup arranged through your guesthouse, which is the safest option.

Private transfer from Fortaleza

The most comfortable alternative: it leaves from the airport and drops you at the door, with no change of vehicle. It is the natural choice for families with luggage, for kite gear, or for arrivals at awkward hours. Most guesthouses will arrange it, and it usually works out better than booking on the spot at the airport.

i
If you arrive at night, have the final transfer booked ahead. At quiet times cars are scarce in Aracati — this is the point where most people come unstuck. See each route step by step in how to get to Fortim.
🛏️ Your base

Where to stay to do everything on foot

Without a car, where you sleep shapes the whole trip. Both of Fortim's tourist areas work well on foot — each for a different kind of trip.

Barra do Fortim

Guesthouses sit a few hundred metres from the beach. On foot you reach the beach bars, the low-tide lagoons at Canto da Barra and the departure point for boat tours. It suits anyone who wants the beach every day and a slower pace.

Pontal de Maceió

The village is compact: the square, the church, restaurants and the lookout are a few minutes apart, and it is where most kitesurfing schools are based. It is the base for anyone who puts food, nightlife and walking first.

The full comparison is in where to stay in Fortim: Barra or Pontal.

🛺 Once you are there

Getting from one beach to another

Internal distances are short but not trivial: Canto da Barra to Pontal de Maceió is roughly 5 to 8 km depending on where you start. For those stretches there are three options.

Moto-taxi. Handles short hops for one person, such as going out for dinner in the other area.

Buggy. It is transport and a tour in one: many of the dune stretches can only be done this way, and drivers work with set routes. See how buggy tours in Fortim work.

Taxi or a driver recommended by your guesthouse. The safest option at night and for groups.

i
Ride apps have patchy coverage in Fortim. Do not count on a car being available at any hour, especially at night and in low season — and arrange your ride back before you set out.
🗓️ Your itinerary

Plan your days by area

Group things that lie in the same direction into the same day. A full day in Barra, another in Pontal and one set aside for a tour go further than crossing town several times.

Some outings take care of part of the travel themselves: see how the boat and ATV tours and the Jaguaribe River ferry crossing work. When you book any tour, confirm the meeting point, how long it lasts, what is included and how you get back.

✅ Before you go

Checklist for a car-free trip

  • Agree with your guesthouse how you will arrive, from the airport or from Aracati to the door.
  • Ask for the exact location of the property and check on the map the distances you will actually walk.
  • Fix the outward and return trip for each tour before departure time.
  • Carry cash in reais: ATMs are scarce in Fortim and many beach bars and tour operators do not take cards.
  • Have a fallback for rain, tide or a change of schedule.
