Fortim sits on the eastern coast of Ceará, about 135 km from Fortaleza. There is no airport with scheduled flights in the municipality and no bus route that runs into town, so in practice every approach goes through Fortaleza or Aracati. Here is each option.
This is the simplest way in and the one that gives you the most freedom afterwards, since Fortim’s beaches are spread out and local public transport is limited.
From Fortaleza, take the CE-040 towards Aracati and stay on it for almost the whole journey. Roughly 15 km before Aracati you turn left at the sign for Fortim. The road is signposted and well maintained.
Once in the centre of Fortim, anyone heading for Pontal de Maceió continues 6 km along the road out of town. For Barra do Fortim you take the beach access right at the entrance.
Allow two to two and a half hours between central Fortaleza and Fortim, depending on where you start and on traffic leaving the city. The final stretch, from the turn-off to the beach, is short but slower.
Pinto Martins International Airport in Fortaleza is where essentially everyone arrives. It has the scheduled flights and all the national car rental desks, which makes it the default: land, pick up the car, drive the two and a half hours.
Aracati has its own airport, much nearer: about 23 km from Pontal de Maceió, roughly 30 minutes. The catch is the schedule — service is intermittent and you cannot rely on a scheduled flight. Worth checking, but do not build the trip around it.
No service stops inside Fortim. The way to do it is to reach Aracati or Canoa Quebrada and cover the last leg yourself.
Viação São Benedito runs the connection from the Engenheiro João Thomé bus terminal in Fortaleza towards Aracati and Canoa Quebrada. It usually takes around four hours — longer than driving, because the bus stops in towns along the way.
Aracati to Fortim is about 20 km, which you cover by taxi or ride app. It is worth arranging this with your guesthouse in advance: many will organise the pickup, and at quiet times cars are scarce in Aracati.
If you would rather not drive or change vehicles, a private transfer from Fortaleza airport to Fortim is the most comfortable alternative. It is the natural choice for families with luggage, for kite gear, or for arrivals at awkward hours.
Most guesthouses in the area will arrange this for you, and it usually works out better than booking on the spot at the airport. Ask for a quote when you book your accommodation.
Internal distances are short but not trivial: Canto da Barra to Pontal de Maceió is roughly 5 to 8 km depending on where you start.
Works well within Barra do Fortim, where guesthouses sit a few hundred metres from the beach, and within Pontal, which is compact.
That means a car, a moto-taxi or a buggy. Ride apps have unreliable coverage in Fortim — do not count on a car being available at any hour, especially at night and out of season.
As much an excursion as a way of getting around: many of the dune sections can only be done this way. Buggy drivers work set routes, and it is the usual way to see the surrounding coastline.
